Why vaccinate

Prevention is kinder than treatment

Vaccines help your pet's immune system recognise and fight specific infectious diseases, several of which can be serious or difficult to treat.

Keeping vaccines current also protects other animals in your household and community.

Young pets

Puppy and kitten series

Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccines a few weeks apart to build protection. Timing: [CONFIRM WITH CLINIC]

Our first-year guides explain what to expect over those early visits.

Adult pets

Adult boosters

After the initial series, adult pets need boosters to keep their protection up. How often depends on the vaccine and your pet: [CONFIRM WITH CLINIC]

We usually combine booster visits with a wellness examination.

Tailored care

Core vs lifestyle vaccines

Core vaccines are recommended for most dogs and cats. Lifestyle vaccines depend on your pet's risk.

We tailor recommendations to how your pet lives, and your veterinarian will advise on what makes sense. Things we consider include:

  • Boarding, daycare or grooming visits
  • Outdoor access and time in parks or trails
  • Contact with Okanagan wildlife
  • Travel outside the region or abroad

Your visit

What to bring

  • Previous vaccination and medical records, if your pet has been seen elsewhere
  • A list of current medications or supplements
  • Any questions about boarding, travel or lifestyle

Afterwards

After the vaccine

Some pets are a little tired or sore at the injection site for a day or so. These mild reactions are usually short-lived.

Call us if your pet has facial swelling, hives, vomiting, difficulty breathing or collapses, or if mild signs last more than a day or two. For after-hours emergencies, please contact Fairfield Animal Hospital at (250) 860-6550.

Questions

Common questions

Which vaccines does my pet need?
Most pets receive core vaccines, plus lifestyle vaccines based on their risk. Your veterinarian will recommend a plan after talking about how your pet lives.
My indoor cat never goes outside. Do they still need vaccines?
Indoor cats are at lower risk for some diseases, but not all. We will advise on what is sensible for your cat.
Can you use my pet's previous records?
Yes. Please bring or send previous vaccine records so we can avoid unnecessary repeats and plan what is due.
Are side effects common?
Most pets have no reaction or only mild, short-lived tiredness or soreness. Serious reactions are uncommon; call us right away if you are worried.
How much do vaccines cost?
Please contact us for current pricing. Costs depend on which vaccines are recommended for your pet.
