Foxtails and grass seeds: a small hazard with big consequences

Dry grass seeds work their way into paws, ears and noses. What to look for after a walk, and when it is worth a phone call.

Foxtail-type grass seeds are shaped to travel one way: forward. Once one lodges in a paw, ear canal, nostril or eyelid, it tends to migrate rather than fall out.

After walks through dry grass, run your hands between the toes and check the ears. Sudden head shaking, persistent sneezing, a swollen paw or one-sided eye discomfort are all worth attention.

Seeds are usually much easier to deal with early. If you suspect one, call the hospital rather than waiting to see whether it settles.
